Editing Day 1

I may have finished my 50k goal, but I’m not stopping until this thing is polished.  I have a few scenes to add and finish, I have some trimming and some shining to do, and I need to come up with a much better title than “The Forest Witch”.

A lot of work, but it feels strangely freeing to work on beyond the 50k goal.  I want to dedicate at least one hour each day to this, and in May, I’m going to start collecting beta readers.  Unfortunately, I can’t pay right now for help with this, so I’ll mostly do book exchanges– I edit for someone, and they edit for me.  I hope I don’t let anyone down while I’m taking my turn to edit their work.

I completed the Camp NaNoWriMo challenge just moments ago, with the words “You got hit by a fucking car!”.

The story isn’t yet complete, but I’m so happy I made 50k in twenty days.  Some days were harder than others, and some days went by quickly.  Today, went by in a flurry of typing, and I’m going to dedicate the rest of the month to further work on my novel– writing out those last scenes, adding more scenes, and preparing for the rigorous editing process.  Wish me luck!

Day 20

I’m so excited!  I have less than 3,500 words to go!  If I really push, I might finish today, but chances are low for that, so I’m just going to try my best and see if I can finish by tomorrow.  After that, I’m going to edit and work on making this story tolerable– quality has dropped significantly since the start, but I still feel confident that I can improve it.

The weak part is the climactic rise, which I’m still typing.  I’m pretty pleased with my plan for the ending, and can’t wait to reward myself for finishing the rise by typing that and the anticlimax!

Today, my “I’ve had a mental breakdown please send help and no-bake cookies!” count is 1k.  My real goal is 2k.  I’ll probably die of excitement if I manage 3k.

If I finish my 50k, I’ll probably hide under my desk because it means I won.  Wish me luck!

Day 19

I managed all of 500 words yesterday thanks partly to the migraine, and partly to just needing some rest due to a series of frightening dreams that left me feeling drained.  Today’s already a lot better.  I’ve written several roleplay replies, gotten some art of Mac’s boyfriend, the sexy Mexican dentist who’s got a heart made of love that he can’t wait to share, and there’s some incoming art of Ricky and Mack together on the way!  I’m super excited to get more of the story told, even if it is difficult to write some of the scenes because they go against the happy end I want.  I need to just remember that things work out in the end for the best, and to write those hard times– without them, the story’s nothing special.

Today, my bare minimum is 1k.  I hope for 1.5k to make up for yesterday, and I get to reward myself if I do 3k and make it to 47.5k total.

Also, everyone with an interest in stories, writing, map-making, world-building, roleplay, and anything related should still check out my website,  If there’s anything missing from there that you think should be included, either join the chat and let me know, or use the contact form (which can be anonymous).  I want to find all the gaps and help the site become the kind of place a writer can go to find a link anywhere for solid writing help, both in-chat and out.

Day 18

I got good progress yesterday by making it not only to 44k, but I reworked the ending of the story so it’s more satisfying.

Today, I woke up with a severe migraine though, and my gag reflex was being active.  Right now, I’m just waiting for it to kick in and hoping for the best.  I hope to get to 45k or more though once the pain goes away.

Day 17

I made a little over 1k words yesterday, mostly knitting things together from scenes into a cohesive story.  So far it’s going well, and I just need a few more scenes (or to edit in) more of the conflict’s more visual signs.  I’m having a difficult time with that, but I’m going to be editing soon with a friend’s help, and he’s extremely skilled, so I can rely on him to help me with the parts of my novel I’m not so strong with.

Today, I want to add another scene and stop wimping out on writing more love scenes.  Wish me luck, I may need it!  The two books I bought to help with love scenes have proven unhelpful already.  Does anyone know of any good resources for writing love scenes that don’t read awkwardly?

Geez, I’m complaining a lot.

Anyway, I better get writing.  The kid I watch (ugh) is likely to arrive early today, and he likes to watch television.

Day 16

I only made 1k last night, but I’m ok with that, because I came up with a pretty cute epilogue.  I can only assume it’s because I wasn’t concentrating on making a lot of words and took a bit of a break.  I didn’t shake at all today, so I shifted my goal back down, and if I pass it and still have more story, I’ll raise it again.  I like winning.

Also, if there’s a discount on Scrivener, I’d like to host a raffle or some sort of giveaway for it on my new site, and that involves winning.

Even if there isn’t a discount on Scrivener, I still want to give away one of my prizes, simply because not everyone wins, and it would be cool to help out someone who didn’t do as well as they hoped.

Anyway, my own writing goals are a shameful minimum of 1k (party’s over, after all), then a good goal is 2k.  3k is serious bragging rights.  I get myself some ebooks at 4k.
